The FDA is investigating a potential link between the drug Pfizer Inc.’s erectile dysfunction drug Cialis and the death of a child, a report said.
The report, which appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, said the death of a 19-year-old woman, who was taking Cialis, is the first reported case of a rare heart problem linked to the drug. The woman died two days after taking it, but doctors said she was a victim of the drug, or at least someone who’s been exposed to the risk.
The FDA had also been investigating possible link between the drug and a sudden heart attack or death, said Paul B. Stuber, MD, president of the American Heart Association, in a statement.
He said, “We’re continuing to evaluate this report and will provide additional information as we continue to evaluate our findings.”
The FDA had been working with the maker of Cialis, Pfizer, for several months to determine whether it would be safe for consumers to purchase the drug from the Internet, the FDA said.
Pfizer was not immediately available for comment.
In June, the FDA issued a warning about the increased risk of stroke and heart attack with the use of the drug in patients with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure. It said the risk of stroke and heart attack is particularly high in patients with certain types of diabetes and those taking certain medications.The FDA said it has received several reports of the drug’s adverse events associated with its use. In addition to its reports of sudden and unexpected hearing loss, the FDA said there are more serious side effects, including an increased risk of serious cardiac problems, vision problems, and heart attack.
In June, the FDA said it received a letter from Pfizer suggesting that patients using Cialis with the drug, called tadalafil, should be warned about the potential dangers of the drug.
“Pfizer has engaged in extensive clinical investigation and testing of the safety and effectiveness of this medication,” said FDA’s website. “These serious adverse events have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration, and the FDA has not identified any serious adverse events to date.”
The FDA said it has received reports of people taking Cialis with the drug.
In June, the FDA said it had received a letter from the company promoting the drug to the National Institutes of Health.
In September, the FDA said it was reviewing the potential risks and benefits of using Cialis with tadalafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
